Crews need to be provided with food in order to work efficiently. Although crewmates cannot starve to death, a crew that is not well fed will suffer penalties to the action they take. Food is made from crops grown in the bioreactor and then packaged in the factory.
The Food resource is “banked” with the crew and stored in their hab module. Once banked it cannot be withdrawn and will be consumed until empty. A crew can store a maximum amount of food equal to 1 tonne (1000 kg) per crewmate. That food is transfered to the crew rations from any inventory the player has access to, using the Resupply Food option of the crew details window.
Each Crewmate consumes food at a rate of one tonne per Adalian year (~15 real days) when they are not rationing. Once the rations drop below 50% (500kg per crewmate), the crew will enter rationing mode (see below) and their food consumption will be halved.
It will take 6 Adalian months (~ 1 week) to go from 100% to 50%
It will take 1 Adalian year (~ 2 weeks) to go from 50% to 0%
The dietician trait from scientists reduces the base food consumption rate by 5%.
When their food supplies are below 50%, a crew will enter rationing mode. In that mode, the crew will suffer penalties to most of the actions they start. The crew’s efficiency will drop linearly until it reaches 25% when food supplies are exhausted. The efficiency will never drop below 25%.
Arvad crewmates with a job in the medicine department provide a penalty reduction bonus that helps counter the efficiency loss, with each tier giving 0.83%. This will not prevent the efficiency to eventually drop to 25%, but it will take longer to reach that point (as if it needed the food level to reach a negative value).
This value is then constrained between 25% (biggest penalty) and 100% (no penalty).
